DUMC Catalyst for Change
The
Dayton Urban Ministry Center is a faith based nonprofit organization,
that grew out of collaborative efforts of College Hill Community
Church, Presbyterian (USA), United Theological Seminary, and the
residents of the northwest section of Dayton. The mission of this
collaborative is to help alleviate poverty in impoverished neighborhoods
through socioeconomic, educational, and leadership development programs.
The focal point of this collaborative has been one of Dayton's most
distressed neighborhoods, Otterbein Estates, which is located in
Wesleyan Hills, is the first focus.
Community building is changing the once bleak landscape. Otterbein
Estates was once area of low-income and rental homes saturated with
social problems. Gradually, through a grassroots effort of community
building and bringing outside resources into the area, Otterbein
Estates is becoming a community of neighbors.
Children's Programs
DUMC provides after school programs for neighborhood children
ages 6-12. DUMC staff work to create positive self-esteem through
our programming for children. Activities include computer classes,
tutoring, dance classes, Camp Fire USA, Men of Valor, home assistant
and nutritional snacks.
Each summer, we offer a summer day camp program which each week
brings something new and different such as International Week, Dance
Week and so on.
The Children served by these programs are enriched by the opportunity
to see the world outside of their immediate neighborhood and to
be supervised by loving and caring adults while their parents are
employed outside the home.
Housing Development
DUMC
has been instrumental in creating a Landlord's group that has been
engaged in investing in the community and building a brighter future
for our neighbors. The key to this is the work done to create safe
places for children and adults alike. Housing codes are being enforced,
absentee landlords are being called to task, speed bumps to control
traffic have been installed, abandoned apartments have been torn
down, litter has been removed, and landscaping for the housing is
being upgraded.
Community Outreach
DUMC staff work with local social agencies to arrange for
nutrition services, job placements, furniture, financial assistant,
and transportation for area residents.
DUMC has further aided in the development of community by being
the major sponsor of an annual festival, block parties and health
fairs.
